International Congress on Domestic Animal Breeding Genetics and Husbandry - 2023
ICABGEH - 23
Krakow, POLAND - September 18 - 20, 2023
The International Congress on Domestic Animal Breeding Genetics and Husbandry - 2023 (ICABGEH-23) congress is organized by the Ondokuz Mayıs University, Bydgoszcz University of Science and Technology, and the University of Agriculture in Krakow. ICABGEH-23 is the seventh international event of the meeting series with the participation of very popular invited speakers Dr. Margrethe THERKILDSEN (Aarhus University), Dr. Laurent JOURNAUX (France Génétique Elevage), and Dr. Petr SLÁMA (Mendel University in Brno). This event has brought together leading researchers, engineers, and scientists in the domain of interest worldwide. It also provides opportunities for the delegates to exchange new ideas and application experiences face to face and virtually, to establish business or research relations, and to find global partners for future collaboration.
The organizing committee is seriously planning and is already working towards enabling the international animal science community to meet the challenges and to move safely and successfully into the advanced information era. To this end, ICABGEH-23 has been focused on recent developments, such as research on animal science aiming at protecting the environment and food safety. Thus, ICABGEH-2023 has achieved its main twofold objective: First, the presentation of current research works in the field of animal science, and second, connecting the animal science community.
Prof. Dr. Hasan ÖNDER,
Congress President
Dr. Margrethe THERKILDSEN
My main research area is meat quality, emphasizing the tenderness of beef and pork and the biochemical processes involved in the tenderisation of meat post-mortem. In general, this involves the development of production strategies to improve the eating quality of meat. I focus on muscle growth and development and the link between in vivo protein turnover and post-mortem tenderisation. This includes the development of methods to explore the in vivo protein turnover and the regulation of protein synthesis and degradation in the live animal, as well as studies of the proteolytical enzyme system, the calpains, and their involvement in both muscle growth and post-mortem tenderisation. In addition, the research also includes classical methods to measure proteolysis post-mortem such as the determination of myofibrillar fragmentation index (MFI) and Western blotting of specific muscle proteins, as well as proteome analyses of muscle tissue. Lately, compensatory growth strategies have been studied in pigs and cattle to optimize muscle protein turnover in live animals, especially muscle protein degradation at slaughter to optimize the tenderness development post-mortem. Muscle protein degradation during compensatory growth in bull calves has been elucidated. These results are now used to evaluate the optimal time of slaughter of animals on a feeding strategy involving restrictive and ad libitum feeding periods. As a new way to explore and develop beef production, production development, and sale I am involved in a network called “Development of concepts for beef products from stable to table”. The participants are butchers, processing enterprises, beef producers, and scientists within the meat quality and marketing area. Through collaboration, the aim is to develop concepts for beef products that build on story, differentiation, and quality in fresh and processed beef products.
Dr. Laurent JOURNAUX
Journaux Laurent currently works at France Génétique Elevage and is General Secretary of ATF (Animal Task Force). Journaux does research in Animal Science. He has a career in the field of ruminant genetic improvement. As part of managing a department of 50 people and animating an Interporfession, He contributes to the interfaces between research, businesses, professional organizations, and international organizations. He is particularly attached to the finalization of R&D work for the benefit of all ruminant breeders.
Dr. Petr SLÁMA
Petr Sláma currently works at the Department of Animal Morphology, Physiology, and Genetics of the Faculty of AgriSciences at the Mendel University Brno. He teaches undergraduate and graduate Animal Morphology, Physiology, and Genetics courses. He has worked as a manager or researcher in many national and international projects. He has more than forty national and international publications. He has participated in many national and international congresses as a participant or invited speaker.
